Do you ever hear someone say something that makes you stop in your tracks and think for a moment? That is exactly what happened to me yesterday.
My daughter was watching this silly cartoon on the Discovery Kids Channel called ‘Kenny the Shark’, while I was washing the kitchen floor. I wasn’t even paying attention to the TV but I could overhear some of the storyline. Kenny is a shark that wanted to leave the water and now he’s a little girl’s land walking pet shark that does everything that people do.
In this silly story Kenny wanted to enter a Dog Race with other Normal Pets. A friend of his was helping him train. While Kenny was complaining his friend said, “Do you want to win this race?” Of course Kenny replied, “Yes”. Then his friend said something that struck me, I had to stop mopping for a minute while it hit me. He said, “Then You are Going to Have to Want Nothing Else Until You Win this Race.”
That statement hit me because That is What True Success is All About. It is about focusing ONLY on the ONE THING that we want to achieve. It is easy for us to get distracted, spread out our focus and make up excuses about why we haven’t achieved what we want. But, if we continue to let ourselves get distracted and focus on more than one thing at a time, we will never see True Success. We’ll Never Win the Race.
It’s not about sprinting through The Marathon and achieving all of our desires at once. It’s about focusing on Winning one Goal and One Race at a Time. If we focus all of our energy into wanting nothing else except our one goal, There is No Stopping Us!
Look at all of the things you Want to Accomplish and are Trying to Accomplish right now. Are you spreading yourself out instead of focusing on one thing? Create a ‘List of Races’ for yourself and Commit to Winning One Race at a Time. Write them down in order so you know which race you need to win first, then next, and so forth….
This list will be great for you to see the big picture, but to also break it down so that you can ‘Want’ one thing at a time and not get yourself distracted. When it comes down to it, we have to Want it More than Anything Else before we can achieve it.

What great advice Danielle! I know how important it is to work on one thing at a time, and try so hard to do it.
I’m STILL working on it.
Hint: David and I were going in circles, so we made a little check list box to accomplish one task at a time.
It worked very well for three days, but then one of our properties sold, so life stopped and we had to sign contracts, another investment home which was under contract was almost going to blow up. Our lives had to stop and we had to take care of immediate business. We kept telling our anxious sleves “It’s ok…we accomplished that task. Not the ones we set out for”
I still feel it’s not OK but I realized Life has to be factored in.
Thanks for this wonderful reminder for me because I really needed it this week.
Now I have pictures in my mind of the shark……:)

You’re right on the money with this one, Danielle! I’ve been doing too much of this lately. Isn’t great how we can get our messages from the most unusual sources!

Hi Danielle,
Great reminder. I love it when my children make me remember important lessons. I needed this reminder of focusing in one thing at a time. Thank you!

Danielle,
When you listen to cartoons or kids shows, it’s amazing the lessons that are taught there. Hopefully these messages will have some impact on the kids that do watch them.
Yes, find your Why and don’t let anything or anyone deter you!

Hi Danielle,
Fantastic post! I love the focusing on one thing and making that your goal. It’s like driving to two different places at the same time if you have too many goals. It’s good to have a secondary source of income or do multiple things but always have 1 clear goal in mind and make that your target.
Thanks for sharing,

I don’t really like running, but when I trained for the NYC Marathon one year, I learned one thing very quickly. In order to do well I had to train EVERY DAY, not just when the mood struck.
The next thing I learned was to never try to do more than I was capable of, or more than I had trained for. If I was doing 8 mile runs for 2 weeks, I might go to 9 mile runs the 3rd week. That did NOT mean I could chug along for 14 miles on a day I felt great. That sort of “over-performing” almost always leads to injury, and often to injury severe enough to shelve your training for months.
So, as the athletes say, “stay within yourself”. That doesn’t mean slack off, it means do everything you are capable of on a consistent basis, and slowly step up your game. But don’t try to overachieve or accelerate too quickly, or you’ll probably end up on the sidelines, and possibly out of the game permanently.
Your post reminded me of all these things, Danielle, and they’re obviously as true for internet marketers as martathon runners. Thanks for bringing them to our attention. They are important lessons to learn, earlier rather than later on in our training!

Great post Danielle!
I will admit that I have been guilty of spreading myself too thin, of being so spread out that I start a million things and never finish any of them! Ok, I’m off to focus now!
Take care,

Dear Danielle,
Amazing, isn’t it? Our most important lessons often come from the most unlikely sources! Any “race” that I have ever wanted to win, has required my full focus! Online marketing is no different. The trick for us parents, though, is finding the balance. That is very tough for me because I can be very all or nothing! I have thrown myself into this with everything I’ve got and my teens are getting a little annoyed because they have been used to having mom at their disposal!
Well, I do believe it is time to focus in a different way. I think that I need to limit my work time and give COMPLETE focus during those hours. Thanks for the insight!

Danielle,
I always enjoy the movies and so from your children’s lives you share. It connects me with my inner child.
I find the story you tell powerful, not silly as you call it.
In fact, the most powerful results are achieved when we do it in a fun way and enjoy the process.
This is the truth and I wish we all start living it. NOW.
Lovingly,

Great message from a cartoon! I’ve been watching Spongebob lately with my girls but I just can’t seem to get any good life lessons from that crazy yellow guy! Thanks for sharing this message! We all need to do more of this.
